Random Acts of Culture™ Hit Charlotte Airport, Business Center
Wow it’s been a busy month around the Arts and Science Council! Since our first Random Act of Culture at the Atherton Mills Market located in historic South End in late August we’ve already been able to do two more.
On September 17, our friends at Wachovia/ Wells Fargo hosted ASC and Opera Carolina at the Uptown Atrium in Center City Charlotte. We were fortunate enough to have the Knight Foundation send up filmmaker Kirmaya Cevallos to film the RAC – see the video here. At noon, as 10+ Opera Carolina performers intermingled in the lunch crowd in the Atrium, one of the singers stood up from a table and broke out into song. The following seven minutes saw performers emerge from every part of the Atrium, including down an escalator as they performed the following selections:
“O mio babbino caro” from Gianni Schicchi by Puccini “Quando men vo” from La Boheme by Puccini “Brindisi (also referred to as libiamo)” from La Traviata by Verdi
It was certainly a surprising event for those out to lunch!
Our third Random Act of Culture took place September 29 in the atrium area of Charlotte Douglas International Airport with North Carolina Dance Theatre (NCDT). We were thrilled to welcome on a new RAC participant! Performing a modern dance called ‘Tree Hugger’ choreographed by Sasha Janes, three dancers from NCDT emerged from the bustling airport crowds at 2:30pm and 4pm to wow surprised passersby. The two, six minute performances, accompanied by pianist David Morse, drew people in who were surprised and entertained. Click here to see local press coverage of the event.
The Random Acts are moving along very well here in Charlotte. We have a ton of interested venues and can’t wait to work with the Charlotte Symphony, as well as continue our work with Opera Carolina and NC Dance Theatre.
Cultural Innovation Grant grantees named
ASC is also excited to announce the three recipients of the Cultural Innovation grants. The grants provide two years of funding to invest in emerging cultural organizations that show promise programmatically and innovate in serving the diverse population. ASC earned a $60,000 grant from the Knight Foundation and provided an additional $45,000 in matching funds to extend the grant another year. The recipients are Carolina Actor’s Studio Theatre, Charlotte ARTery, and Charlotte ViewPoint. We can’t wait to help these organizations expand their role and impact in the community!
