A world famous and innovative dance company comes to Charlotte after a prolonged absence of 30 years. On January 18, UNC Charlotte’s College of Arts + Architecture will present the Martha Graham Dance Company at 8 p.m. in the Knight Theater. Known for the ground-breaking choreography of modern dance pioneer Martha Graham, the Company offers authentic Graham experiences and showcases new and exciting pieces from contemporary choreographers.

Friday night’s program will feature “Appalachian Spring” (1944), Graham’s masterwork about the “simple fineness of the human spirit,” as well as the world premiere of a lost Graham work, “Imperial Gesture” (1935) as re-created by Kim Jones, assistant professor of dance at UNCC. “Panorama” (1935) will round out the program preformed by a 33-member ensemble of UNCC dancers (current and alumni) and other dancers from the Charlotte community.
