EXILE yourself in art books at the Book Fair

Detail from Amanda Keeley’s pop-up Exile Books.

There is a super cool new addition to this year’s Miami Book Fair International, which will culminate this weekend Downtown. Artist Amanda Keeley has “opened” her new arts book lounge during the fair, which offers a mix of literary and visual arts fare. Called EXILE Book Lounge, in retrospect it’s a wonder that this type of concept room was not done before.

But maybe that’s because it takes someone like Keeley to bring it to fruition. With an MFA from the Parsons School of Art and Design, Keeley ran Yoko Ono’s studio before starting EXILE Books. She debuted her pop-up, traveling book-store project at Locust Projects in the fall, and then took it over to Books & Books in Coral Gables for its second temporary home. After this fair, it will continue to migrate.

It’s important to note that artists’ books are not (for the most part) books about a particular painter or what not. They are books made by artists, which can run the gamut from textless works to political tomes; they explore print culture and can be independently or widely published (although more the former). The result is a collection that consists of not just books, but ‘zines and monographs and other forms.

But while the lounge wants to entice you to browse these selections, the space is intentionally interactive, with live painting by performance artist Domingo Castillo, flash-mob poetry readings, discussions on experimental art movements, music and even site-specific choreography from the local Peter London Global Dance. Along with Keeley, other artists will be on hand, and the featured guest is Cristina Favretto, head of special collections at University of Miami Libraries. The lounge won’t be hard to find – the entrance is filled with Ono’s Wish Trees.

EXILE Book Lounge takes place Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., during the Miami Book Fair International at Miami Dade College, 300 NE Second Ave. (Building 2, 1st Floor, Room 2103), Miami. Admission is free after admission to the fair. For more details, go to www.miamibookfair.com/events/exilebook_lounge.aspx.
