Alternative cinema in the Queen City

“The Double” movie poster.

If, like me, you are largely unimpressed with the blockbusters hitting the major cinemas lately, rest assured there is a source for independent, artsy and foreign films in the Queen City: the Charlotte Film Society. Founded in 1982, the Society is a non-profit organization “dedicated to providing a choice in moving going experiences.” They support alternative cinema through two main series: Saturday Night Cine Club and Back Alley Film Series, but a new initiative Charlotte Film Lab provides viewings and conversations with film creators.

Up next on the Charlotte Film Society’s roster is “The Double,” written and directed by Richard Ayoade and starring Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska. Ayoade presents a darkly comic adaptation of Dostoevsky’s novella, in which Eisenberg plays Simon James, a timid office clerk who is continually overlooked by everyone around him. It seems his directionless life could not get any worse until a new co-worker arrives – named, oddly enough, James Simon. Simon is Simon James’ doppelganger, except where James is reserved and nervous, Simon is charismatic and confident. The Society will screen “The Double” at Theatre Charlotte on Saturday, August 16th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for members/students and $10 for non-members.

Also in August as part of the Back Alley Film Series, there will be a screening of “Moebius.” Directed by Ki-duk Kim this South Korean film explores the relationships of a jealous housewife enraged by her husband’s affair and their son. “Moebius” will be shown at Crownpoint Stadium 12 on Thursday, August 28th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for members/students and $10 for non-members.
