Liz Ferrer’s “Spectual Sextrum” opens at Inkub8

On Tuesday, September 23rd at 7:30 p.m., Liz Ferrer will host “Spectual Sextrum,” an experimental research gathering event for her apocalyptic underwater work-in-progress, “Subaqueous.”

“Spectual Sextrum.”

Ferrer, who is currently artist-in-residence at Inkub8 (a Knight Arts grantee), is a Miami-based interdisciplinary artist, director and founder of the art collective Southernmost Situations. Her work, informed by her lifelong experiences growing up in South Florida, are theater-driven performances that involve spectacle and play.

“Spectual Sextrum” will strategically teeter totter on the sexual spectrum in this gestural audio/visual queer ‘lecture’ inspired by gender identity politics and feminist theory. The evening features projections by VJ Misael Soto, poetry by JV Portela and myself, a short film The Devil Doll chosen by Stefanie Del Papa, and a musical performance by Dracula.

The Devil Doll is a 1936 horror film directed by Tod Browning in which Lionel Barrymore exacts revenge on his former colleagues while dressed in drag. Dracula is a musical quartet comprised of vocalist Dorys Bello, guitarist Eli Oviedo, sawist Kian Seara and percussionist Gyr Ofjudah. They were named “Best Acoustic Performer” by the Miami New Times in 2011.

“Spectual Sextrum” opens Tuesday, September 23rd at 7:30 p.m. at Inkub8, 2021 NW 1st Place, Miami. Admission is free. For more information, visit www.inkub8.org.
