The 2014 Highland Square Porch Rockr Festival

By Anita Marron, HSNA

Explore the positive impact of PorchRokr on the Highland Square neighborhood, with interviews and music samplings throughout the day. With more than 90 bands and performers playing on residential porches and stages throughout the 8 block festival area, Highland Square Neighborhood rocked 2014. Over 7000 residents turned out to walk their streets, engage with their neighbors, listen to local bands and promote their love of the place they call home to the many visitors from outside the neighborhood. The festival footprint included an AMAH (Akron Municipal Housing Authority) Apartment complex housing low-income elderly residents. The enthusiasm and participation from these residents was overwhelming and was a highlight of the year for them. The AMHA is excited to become a regular booster of PorchRokr.

Artists, Food vendors, crafts people and many non-profits set up shop among the streets and yards creating an eclectic vibe. Some of the extras this year included the Guitar Orchestra workshop and performance, a pop-up Skateboard park and trolley shuttles to and from the Historic Perkins Mansion for a sheep herding demonstration. There was truly something for every taste!
