To launch a comprehensive housing and services program for the homeless to decrease homelessness in Columbia and address a persistent obstacle to downtown development

This $5 million challenge grant will launch a comprehensive housing program for Columbia’s homeless. Spearheaded by the business community, which believes the homeless problem is hindering downtown development, the public-private initiative will offer a variety of housing options to 200-250 homeless people each year.

Job training, financial help and an on-site pharmacy also will be offered. The United Way of the Midlands will be the effort’s lead agency.
