The Opportunity Project Learning Center

To teach social and emotional learning skills to 80 percent of 3- and 4-year-olds attending early learning centers in Wichita and provide a potential model for a statewide universal pre-kindergarten program.

Date Awarded: 09/12/2006
Amount: $1,400,000.00
Grant Period: 09/01/2006 to 09/01/2009
Program: Communities Program
Community: Wichita

The Opportunity Project learning centers (TOP) serve children, ages 2-4, in low-income communities in Sedgwick County. This grant will help bring a tested curriculum that enhances critical thinking and communication skills to 80 percent of three and four-year-olds attending Wichita's early learning centers. TOP administrators will ensure that teachers are trained, and that parents attend an orientation session. Through the effort, more than 3,000 pre-kindergarten students will improve their social and emotional skills with the "I Can Problem Solve" curriculum.  Parents, meanwhile, will learn how to encourage critical thinking.
