Though India has long been a democracy with a vibrant free press, it still lacks the skilled journalists to cover increasingly important developments, whether it's the country's rapid growth or increasing geopolitical and environmental pressures. Inside the country, India is experiencing unprecedented media growth. New newspapers, magazines, TV news channels and news web sites are cropping up each month. The government is planning to allow, for the first time, private radio stations to deliver news. The changing landscape has created a huge demand for competent, ethical and objective journalists with the skills to thrive in the changing media environment. New Delhi and Mumbai may be the media centers of India, but neither has a high-quality, independent professional institution that teaches writing, reporting, editing and production across media platforms. In addition, there are no standard methods for teaching journalists the ethics, integrity and civic commitment needed to help India thrive as an emerging world power. ICFJ will collaborate with the Indo-Asian News Service, an independent news agency based in New Delhi, to launch the India International Journalism Institute, a nonprofit organization that will offer a year-long, post-graduate diploma program for entry-level and young journalists. This project is expected to produce a cadre of journalists dedicated to covering issues that need attention in a rapidly changing India, from foreign investing and outsourcing to AIDS and pollution. Ultimately, India will be better equipped to confront the challenges and possibilities it faces now and in the future.
