The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation awarded $2.28 million in challenge grants to 34 cultural projects in communities extending from Delray Beach to Hialeah. Among the recipients is the Arts Garage, a mutidisciplinary cultural venue in Delray Beach that opened in April 2011. The Arts Garage will receive $30,000, which it must match, to continue its existing programming and expand its initiatives for emerging artists.
The grants aim to spark innovative ideas that engage audiences. More that 143 projects have received nearly $20 million in funding since the program began in 2008. More than half the applicants were individuals, businesses or small organizations that didn’t have nonprofit status. The foundation has earmarked an additional $9 million to continue the challenge grants for another three years.
