MIAMI – Nov. 28, 2016 – From Goulds to Liberty City, Key West to West Palm Beach, 44 projects that will bring art to neighborhoods across South Florida will share $2.78 million from the Knight Arts Challenge. The winning ideas are authentically Miami, using the arts to give voice to a range of people and communities that reflect the essence of the city.
A project of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Knight Arts Challenge funds the best ideas for bringing South Florida together through the arts.
Emerging largely from small organizations and individual artists, several winning ideas examine the fluidity of cultures in Miami, exploring the similarities of Cuban and Haitian traditions, for example, or offering artistic points of view from both sides of the Florida Straits. Others go beyond the stereotypes of the Magic City, to tell the stories of people who live here, whether it’s a new play about Miami’s emerging neighborhoods, a festival featuring Miami’s acclaimed solo performers, or an exhibit chronicling the impact of Hurricane Andrew.
South Floridians will also find ideas that span genres and vary from the fringe to the more mainstream. They include the first contemporary art gallery in a national park, a Native American film festival and a major public-art project using augmented reality and artificial intelligence.
“Our mission is to make art general in Miami, so that it can be seen, felt and heard by every resident, no matter where they live, work or play. These projects help get us closer to that ideal, by bringing people together, connecting us to each other and our community,” said Alberto Ibargüen, president of Knight Foundation.

“Artists tell our stories, on our stages, in our galleries, and anywhere in our city that art lives and breathes. The Knight Arts Challenge recognizes that you can find wonderful artistic experiences in unexpected places, and provides the fuel to bring them to more people,” said Victoria Rogers, vice president for arts at Knight Foundation.
At an awards event at New World Center Monday, the foundation also named two artists as Knight Arts Champions, for their contributions to the South Florida cultural community.
They are Ali Codina, an award-winning filmmaker, and Tarell Alvin McCraney, a New World School of the Arts graduate and MacArthur “Genius” Fellow whose critically acclaimed movie, “Moonlight,” is based in Miami. McCraney also won a challenge award Monday night to create a festival of Miami artists and voices.
Both Codina and McCraney received $25,000 to donate to an arts project of their choice.
Knight Foundation has invested more than $122 million in the South Florida arts since 2005, including support for both large institutions to more deeply engage the public, and to propel grassroots efforts through the Knight Arts Challenge.
There are only three rules for applying: 1) The idea must be about the arts; 2) The project must take place in or benefit South Florida; 3) The grant recipients must find funds to match Knight’s commitment. The best receive Knight Foundation support. More than 10,000 ideas have been submitted over eight years.
Previous funding for large institutions has launched a new media program that includes the signature “Wallcasts” at the acclaimed New World Symphony campus, helped bring top films to the Miami International Film Festival, brings every Miami-Dade third-grader to the Pérez Art Museum Miami, and will build a new high-tech recital hall to the University of Miami Frost School of Music, among other projects.
