To re-design an existing vacant house as an opera and performance space, in which community members collaborate with visiting artists
Inspired by the flexibility of uses for houses in Detroit, this project stages a re-design of an existing vacant house as an opera and performance space, in which community members collaborate with visiting artists. For this multi-year project, McEwen Studio is purchasing and renovating a vacant home, and repurposing it into a performance space and artist residency studio. There, artist groups, including the acclaimed collective HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN?, will stage new works that incorporate stories from the Southwest Detroit neighborhood. The project explores what might occur when the borders are erased between art and community, makers and receivers, museums and homes.
