Dabls African Bead Museum

To enhance an educational center for African culture by creating and renovating an exhibition and programming space for the African Bead Museum

Founded in 1994 in Detroit’s Grand River neighborhood, the African Bead Museum is most recognized by its dazzling outdoor installations of recycled materials, vibrant colors, iron and mirrors by founder Olayami Dabls. Continuing with 12 installations, Dabls’ artwork speaks to the community about the power of African culture and the idea that the creative process can elevate the human experience. The museum, however, has no interior space for exhibits — there is only a small bead shop inside the severely damaged building. Challenge funds will repair the building and create that exhibition space so that the museum can share African artifacts and become a community-based educational center.
