Inkub8 workshop series

One of my favorite lines from Jeanette Winterson’s essay “Art Objects” goes like this: “If the arts did not exist, at every moment, someone would begin to create them, in song, out of dust and mud, and although the artifacts might be destroyed, the energy that created them is not destroyed.”

Starting this Saturday, Oct. 29 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., I’ll kick off Inkub8’s 2011 fall workshop series with “Pure NrG,” a creative writing workshop that aims to transform pure energy — the ideas, emotions and memories that live inside of us — into songs, short memoirs, stories and poems. The workshop, like all of the workshops offered during Inkub8’s fall workshop series, is open to everyone at every level.

The next workshop, “Catching Waves” with Isabelle Kirouac, centers on dance and moving with ease and flow — without restrictions and/or hesitation. “Catching Waves” is about allowing the body to fall, flex and find its own center of gravity, its own personal expression. Kirouac, a contact improvisation artist, taught in numerous festivals around the world. “Catching Waves” takes place throughout two days — Nov. 11 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Nov. 12 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

On Saturday, Dec 10 from 1 to 4 p.m., Alexey Taran and Carla Forte team up for “Improvisation at the Urban Spaces,” a high-energy workshop designed to sensitize the body to improvisation elements that lead to larger compositions. The workshop is an incubator for the changing states of the body and mind. It’s also a playground for experimentation.

The last workshop, led by Inkub8’s co-founder Heather Maloney, will focus on the physicality of falling. No hard hat required. This workshop pushes the dancer to eliminate self-doubt and work with, instead of against, gravity. This final workshop takes place Saturday, Dec. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Cost for all workshops $15. To register for the fall workshops, send an e-mail to [email protected], or visit www.inkub8.org. 2021 N.W. First Place, Miami , Fla. 33127. For the interactive map, visit http://g.co/maps/4te6d.
