“Tell a truth on purpose. Tempt with exactitude. Make the work you need. Risk being loved.” These are wise words from Haitian-American poet, playwright and spoken word artist Lenelle Moïse, who returns to Miami Feb. 6 through 10 for Knight Arts grantee Tigertail Production’s “SpeakOut” spoken word LGBTQ teen residency. The week includes school and community workshops, a poetry slam for LGBTQ youth and a public reading.

Sponsored by Tigertail Productions, “SpeakOut” and Moïse connect specifically with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and questioning teens in the community. Through her voice and workshops she inspires teens. She motivates them to grab onto their own voice, hold it up like a microphone and speak out and speak up. Truth is vital for teens coming of age and can radically alter the course of their personal growth.

“We are very pleased to bring Lenelle Moïse back for a second year in a row,” said Mary Luft, Tigertail executive director. “Lenelle is an informed, versatile and articulate voice that needs to be heard by South Florida audiences, both in the schools and in the community.”

Moïse will lead “SpeakOut” workshops for students at Miami Northwestern Senior, Dr. Michael M. Krop, North Miami Beach Senior and Miami Arts Charter school, as well as Pridelines. These workshops train teens how to use the art of poetry, theater and hip-hop culture to boost their writing and speaking skills. Teens will have opportunities to perform their work.

Tuesday, Feb. 7, 1:15-2:45 p.m., workshop for LGBTQ students at Miami Arts Charter School and 5:45-8 p.m., workshop for LGBTQ teens from Pridelines Youth Services.

Wednesday, Feb. 8, 8:40-10:45 a.m., performance and workshop with LGBTQ support groups at North Miami Beach Senior High and 1-2:15 p.m., performance and workshop with LGBTQ support groups at Dr. Michael Krop Senior High School.

Thursday, Feb. 9, 6 p.m., “SpeakOut” open mic and slam for LGBTQ youth hosted by Moïse at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens, 2000 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach. Each participant (21 and under, please) gets a chance to arouse, provoke and inspire with spoken word poetry. Material needs to be gay friendly. Free and open to all teens with no reservations needed. Sign up at the event between 5 and 6 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 10, 8 p.m., reading and performance at Books & Books, 265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables. Free and open to all.
