Knight Foundation regrets paying Lehrer speaking fee

Feb. 13, 2013, 10:08 p.m., Posted by Knight Foundation – 51 Comments

On Tuesday, the Knight Foundation paid  Jonah Lehrer to speak at a community foundation conference. In retrospect, as a foundation that has long stood for quality journalism, paying a speaker’s fee was inappropriate. Controversial speakers should have platforms, but Knight Foundation should not have put itself into a position tantamount to rewarding people who have violated the basic tenets of journalism. We regret our mistake.

We started considering Lehrer as a speaker before his plagiarism scandal broke last year.
We knew of his work on the neuroscience and art of decision-making. After he was exposed for making up Bob Dylan quotes, recycling his own material and plagiarizing others, we accepted the risk and invited him. We asked him to talk about decision-making to a conference of people for whom that is a necessary skill. We did not tell him what to say, but knew he would include an exploration of his own self-destructive decision-making, and thought that might make his talk even more poignant.

We try to be as transparent as possible about our work. When asked, we released the amount of the speaker’s fee. The fee was not unusual for a well-known author to address a large conference. But it was simply not something Knight Foundation, given our values, should have paid. We continue to support journalism excellence in the digital age. And we do not want our foundation partners to think that journalism controversies are too hot for them to handle. Instead, we want to send the message that when things go wrong the best action is to admit the error and get back to work.

fire yourselves

You have set journalism back 20 years. Fire yourselves for funding plagiarism.

I'm glad to see so many offended by what could be perceived as a reward for such an egregious violation of journalism ethics. We'd welcome the Knight Foundation to help us solve this problem by participating in the upcoming summit to fight plagiarism and fabrication that the nation's journalism associations are organizing on April 5 in St. Louis.

Feb. 14, 2013, 12:10 a.m.

Wow

What most astounds me about this whole affair is that no one, not a single person at the Knight Foundation raised their hand to say, hey guys, this might be a bad idea. Such an egregious lack of judgment. Makes you wonder who's running the show over there.

What's baffling is that I'm not a journalist, and yet it was clear to me that paying $20,000 to Lehrer was ethically problematic, to put it charitably. So, I'm supposed to believe that this never occurred to the Knight Foundation, except only after appearance and payment?

Feb. 14, 2013, 12:46 a.m.

Maria Guimaraes

I'm sorry but '"in retrospect" does not apply to something that happened two days ago. You are reacting to the negative press you received. Your apology is worse than the original ideia to give Lehrer an Oprah-like platform.
The whole affair was embarrassing, the tweets scrolling during the speech , the interview, the questioning. Lehrer has forgiven himself in advance, will not give up journalism even for a few months because he thinks highly of himlself. And you served us , the audience, as props for his project.

It seems like Transparency 101 would teach you to disclose the honorarium in your 'mea culpa' statement, and not make the reader click elsewhere to discover the exorbitant fee you paid someone to talk about his dishonesty.

Feb. 14, 2013, 1:40 a.m.

Jonathan

$20,000 " was not unusual for a well-known author." Is this The Onion? I thought I was on a journalism site. This "well-known author" talks about the possibility of never being published again because his ethical breaches have alienated all his previous outlets. Would you pay $20,000 -- for many in this country a year's salary - to a "well-known attorney" who's been disbarred?

Feb. 14, 2013, 1:53 a.m.

Mike

I'm a working journalist, and I see this entire thing as one big, sad joke.

As others mentioned, not only did this "retrospective" apology come after a deluge of bad publicity, but it seems your organization is either A) willing to admit egregious flaws in its integrity only after paying the price of widespread public outcry, or perhaps worse, B) so completely inept that you weren't able to figure out that paying Mr. Lehrer $20,000 for his appearance was probably not a good idea, despite having had months to do so.

I hope this dust-up serves as some sort of wake-up call for those who make the decisions at your organization.

Feb. 14, 2013, 3:52 a.m.

Amanda

Unfortunately, a $20,000 speaker fee is far from excessive, even for a nonprofit organization. Perhaps this case will raise awareness of the behind-the-scenes costs that speakers and agencies charge and that event organizers pay. Might make folks think twice about attending conferences with big-name speakers and challenge foundations to more wisely allocate their funds.

Feb. 14, 2013, 5:32 a.m.

boris

Another corrupted "Foundation" shocking....

Feb. 14, 2013, 6:37 a.m.

Of course

So...you were thinking about having Lehrer as a speaker before his perfidy was uncovered, and then decided to have him speak anyway? The potential mea culpa had nothing to do with it -- he was paid to give a speech AS A JOURNALIST? Somebody needs to be fired here.

Feb. 14, 2013, 8:14 a.m.

John

Have you fired those responsible for authorizing the payment?

Feb. 14, 2013, 8:35 a.m.

Science writer

"Instead, we want to send the message that when things go wrong the best action is to admit the error and get back to work."

Are they talking about themselves or Lehrer here? Either way, it's a bad message. There are mistakes in journalism--that require corrections to the record--and then there are corrupt acts, plagiarism, and fraud, which cannot be simply fixed or apologized away. Such actions should be grounds for handing in your press badge, permanently. Sorry Jonah, you'll have to take your hipster hair to another profession.

As for Knight's "oops our bad" here, they should think seriously about how many ethical, hard-working journalists and their work could have benefited from that $20K. Their reputation has taken a hit it may never recover from. Was that #worth20K?

Feb. 14, 2013, 9:02 a.m.

AD

"You've spoken, we agree - it was a mistake for a #journalism foundation to pay @jonahlehrer for a speech."

That you couldn't figure this out on your own, in advance, and that you couldn't figure it out on your own after the fact is troublesome, and it should trouble potential donors and investors.

Feb. 14, 2013, 9:07 a.m.

Rami Touma

I didnt know the Knight foundation before this story. Now I do, and have no respect for them. Great job over there guys!

Feb. 14, 2013, 9:13 a.m.

Richard Backus

Much like the Penn State case, this reveals how a group of really smart people can make the most unethical of decisions. It's not enought to say, "Oops, my bad". Knight Fdn. must take a good hard look at its internal culture and ask why no one stood up and demanded an adherance to basic ethics.

Feb. 14, 2013, 9:24 a.m.

steve

Cancel the check!

Feb. 14, 2013, 9:41 a.m.

The Knight Foundation only posted this "regret" because Gawker (of all publications) shamed them into it. They didn't realize what was wrong about paying $20k to Jonah until it was spelled out for them. They need to think long and hard on that one and shake up the management structure if no one within the organizaiton spoke up on this before it happened.

Feb. 14, 2013, 9:50 a.m.

Lorie Conway

Inviting Lehrer is one thing. Paying him for it? Ridiculous.
If he wouldn't show up without a fee, invite somebody else!
Sadly, there are plenty of people who do this.

Feb. 14, 2013, 10:32 a.m.

Jay

I'm a journalist and I also arrange educational presentations for my readers. Setting up a web-based presentation takes a A LOT OF EFFORT AND TIME multiply that by 20 for a live presentation.

In addition, it is bloody hard to find anyone who will speak gratis on any topic regardless of their level of fame (or infamy).

So you're really expecting us to believe that
A) You didn't consider the "optics" beforehand.
B) Lehrer would have spoken for free if you said pretty please.

Riiiiight.

Your apology is disingenuous and insulting to the intelligence of anyone with half a brain.

Feb. 14, 2013, 10:56 a.m.

Patrick

You can't un-cash that check. This is a travesty, and I'm aghast that this apology only came after outcry on Twitter, Gawker and other sites.

Feb. 14, 2013, 11:32 a.m.

Steve Din

The dishonesty here is striking. You folks knew the eyes of the media world would be on you if you hired Jonah Lehrer--that every magazine, website, and blogger that had written obsessively about the scandal would be focused for a moment on your conference. You even put that hilarious big board on stage to show that world just how much the world was focused... on itself... sorry, I've lost hold of my own syntax. In any case, you did what in your line of work would be the equivalent of paying Lindsay Lohan for an interview. Suddenly your name would be on everyone's lips and in their cookie-caches. What you didn't count on was how much of the rage would bounce off Lehrer (who, like many sociopaths, don't respond to critics in ways that give us satisfaction) and onto you. You knew what you did was wrong but you didn't expect to be called out on it and so you DIDN'T CARE. Oh, well. Time to "admit the error and get back to work." What is the work that you do again?

Feb. 14, 2013, 3:40 p.m.

Thomas Pellechia

I'll apologize on Knight's Foundation's money for much less than 20K, but nobody ever calls.

Oh right: I didn't do anything egregious to be given a forum.

By the way, have you strayed from your mission, or am I just being literal?

"Knight Foundation supports transformational ideas that promote quality journalism, advance media innovation, engage communities and foster the arts. We believe that democracy thrives when people and communities are informed and engaged."

Feb. 14, 2013, 5:48 p.m.

Rebecca Theim

OK, you've come clean, although it's certainly far from clear whether you really just recognized the error of your ways or you're apologizing only because you got caught.

Now it's time for Lehrer to either return the $20K or donate it to a worthy cause. How about our charity that's raising money for hundreds of laid-off newspaper employees in New Orleans?

Feb. 14, 2013, 5:49 p.m.

Kathi

Reacting to negative publicity with "regrets" doesn't make up for the insult to me and other journalists who take pride in providing quality writing that meets high ethical standards. The Foundation's honorarium would have been better spent funding freelancers who maintain ethical ideals.
Like the journalists it purports to support, the Knight Foundation should do the right thing from the outset, and not "accept the risk" that people will balk afterward at a reward for unethical conduct.

Feb. 14, 2013, 6:15 p.m.

alicia shepard

I've lost all respect for Knight. You've set your organization seriously back. I rarely comment on stories, but am compelled on this. SHAME on you for rewarding the people that shouldn't be in journalism in the first place.

Feb. 14, 2013, 8:13 p.m.

John Rosenthal

I hear Jayson Blair is available for $10,000. Janet Cooke says she'll talk for only $5,000. But Judith Miller wants $25,000, and you have to show her your "WMDs."

Feb. 14, 2013, 8:20 p.m.

He was rewarded because he's a solid liberal extremist. Knight is in the same tank

Feb. 14, 2013, 8:23 p.m.

Look at any college classes sylabus and you will see a line about plagiarism and how you will automatically fail the class you are in. What are journalism schools teaching now, when just an ordinary writing class or a math class professor at a community college will kick you out for faking quotes or using someone elses work?

Feb. 14, 2013, 10:26 p.m.

Larry

I was in the audience during his presentation. It was less an examination of decision making than an exercise in narcissism in which he compared himself to Charles Darwin and conflated his intentional misrepresentations and malfeasance with unintentional errors made by the FBI in the Brandon Mayfield case. Throughout, I kept wondering what benefit the audience was supposed to get from his defensive rambles.

The real problem was not that the Knight Foundation paid him, but that it invited him at all. His presentation was irrelevant to the needs of the audience, which was largely made up of foundation leaders. The $20K, to which I assume was added travel expenses amounting to another few thousand dollars, is well above the market value of a plenary presentation by a disgraced author, despite what the Knight Foundation claims.

It was Lance Armstrong redux. What a shame.

Feb. 15, 2013, 6:13 a.m.

Jfnance32

This is funny. Their mission statement: "We believe that democracy thrives when people and communities are informed and engaged."

Being lied to is being informed and engaged?????

Feb. 15, 2013, 9:21 a.m.

No respect for KNIGHT Foundation licking the bottom of the barrel. What is more pathetic is their apology after getting caught. I love it..."The fee was not unusual for a well-known author to address a large conference." He is not a well known AUTHOR, he is a well know LIAR.
SHAME on you Knight Foundation, you knew better, but decided to do it anyway.

Feb. 15, 2013, 10:38 a.m.

Steven

I am sickened and disappointed in you, Knight Foundation. The fee you paid is half the annual salary of many journalists I know who are lucky enough to have a staff job. The fee you paid is more than most hardworking freelance journalists I know make in a year. These are people who forgo the easy way and put their careers, finances, and personal health at stake for the sake of telling important stories as journalists. You spit in their faces when you say, "Hey, it pays to cheat. All you really need to be is a celebrity and we and the whole world will reward you, no matter how unethical your work is." Shame on you, Knight Foundation. Everything about this -- your invitation, your refusal to rescind the invitation, the thinking of your staff that this was acceptable until you got caught, and the sum of money involved -- reeks. You want to have an influence on the state of journalism? You've had one this week: you've told people to cheat and encouraged journalists to lie.

Feb. 15, 2013, 8:43 p.m.

Honest journo

For shame, Knight Foundation. You have disgraced your formerly honorable name. Your mission statement says you stand for "transformational ideas that promote quality journalism." Paying a notorious plagiarist an amount that many honest journalists must work months to earn--assuming they can find work at all in today's terrible media environment-- is certainly an idea that can transform journalism. Your moral obtuseness is simply unforgivable, and your apology is no more convincing than Lehrer's.

Feb. 16, 2013, 3:44 a.m.

Mark

Jonah Lehrer is a serial plagiarist.

The only fitting punishment for Jonah Lehrer would be to have every single one of his fingernails pulled out with a pair of pliers. Afterward, someone should use a hammer to break every single bone in Mr. Lehrer's hands.

I am quite serious.

Feb. 16, 2013, 11:41 a.m.

Catherine

Ha!! Not only is Lehrer a serial liar, so is the Knight Foundation. Their so-called apologies are about as believable as Clinton's emphatic, "I did NOT have sex with that woman!" Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by "sex" or what you mean by "journalism" or, hey, what "is" is.

What self-respecting journalist will ever accept an invitation from Knight in the future?

Feb. 17, 2013, 11:07 a.m.

Fred

The Knight Foundation is a joke, headed up by monied CEOs and publishers, not journalists. So when they make an embarrassing and telling mistake regarding journalism, it's primarily because they don't know any better. And they have the money not to care.

Lehrer is an joke and I can't find a range of time in his life when he's done "journalism." I have no problem with him cashing checks from idiots though. It's not his fault people throw money and jobs at him.

Moreover, I can guarantee you there are at least 4-5 publications considering hiring him to write. He fits the mold. White, indie, young, topical, coastal and brandable. That sells eyeballs and eyeballs sell ads. It's the brutal truth. It's why he's been given the string he already has. Not related to the power of his narrative writing style or whatever. White eyeballs pay the bills.

Feb. 17, 2013, 2:13 p.m.

Mike Jarboe

What makes the hiring of this guy to speak especially disgusting is the fact that there are honest journalists who don't make $20,000 in a year.

Feb. 18, 2013, 12:54 p.m.

Christopher Hyde

I guess the only response to this that I have is my exact response to Lehrer himsel. Now that he has proven himself unreliable, I will never read another word he writes. And now that the Knight Foundation has proven that unreliable journalists garner five figure payouts for apologies, I will no longer spend any time on anything the foundation produces.

Feb. 21, 2013, 1:42 a.m.

Andrew

I was interested in his presentation until he started talking about studies and his interpretation of them... my stomach turned. wait I thought it was an apology and an honest study of himself, but it turned out to be a half-baked attempt to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. By Humpty Dumpty himself.

As many scientists (such as Christopher Chrabris) have written, as bad as his journalistic fraud was he was doing more damage as a bad science writer than anything else.

http://blog.chabris.com/2013/02/what-has-been-forgotten-about-jonah.html

What kind of pink cloud the organizers were on that day, I have no idea. I'm pretty sure that if I videotaped myself having sex with another woman and posted it to the internet that my wife would find out about it and I'd be forced to apologize and express regret. But somehow the Knight foundation didn't realize that everyone would find out about the speaker's fee and be absolutely revolted that an open platform be given for this man to babble on EVEN MORE about science that he doesn't really understand or care about that much beyond his own sociopathic goals of reinvigorating his career.

I've made lots of mistakes in life too, but it just BOGGLES THE MIND
