For the past month, dance artist and creator Nora Chipaumire has led a group of Miami-based dancers, choreographers, performance artists and educators for the inaugural MDC Live Arts Lab, a Knight Arts Challenge Grantee. The goal of the MDC Live Arts Lab intensive is to bring nationally and internationally renowned artists like Chipaumire to Miami for the benefit of Miami artists.

The month-long intensive focused on creating new work, but Chipaumire’s also asked the students to explore the origin of their personal aesthetic through an investigation of space, time and force—an aesthetic that often forms from a complex social, cultural and even spiritual context.

On Tuesday, June 25th at 6 p.m., the artists who participated in the Lab intensive, including Michelle Grant Murray, Octavio Campos and Elana Lanczi, among others, will showcase new works-in-progress. Nora Chipaumire will also showcase an excerpt from her latest work-in-progress, “Rite Riot,” a two-part work commissioned by Crossing the Line festival.

“Rite Riot” is described as an exploration of “contemporary demands for sacrifice by/in various elements of society, with a focus on challenging the colonial perspective of the original work and the assumptions of age, social status and vulnerability that defined the sacrificial victim.”

The event will take place on Tuesday, June 25th from 6-8 p.m. at the New World School of the Arts; 25 N.E. 2nd St. (8th floor, room 5808), Miami. Attendance is free.
