And on Tuesday, they celebrated.

Fifty-six people from metro Detroit’s arts scene chosen as grant recipients in the first Knight Arts Challenge Detroit were honored at an evening event thrown by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Miami-based nonprofit that unveiled a plan in October to give $19.25 million to the Detroit arts community.

Individuals and representatives from arts groups big and small were among the 250 or so people gathered at the Fillmore Detroit for an event meant to recognize those who will receive a piece of the $2.1 million being disbursed as part of the Knight Arts Challenge Detroit’s first year. Individual grants range from $5,000 to $200,000.
