To restore the civic mission of schools by creating a civics curriculum that spans elementary, middle and high schools (K-12)
Leon County Schools, consistently ranked among the top districts in Florida, will use this grant to create a civics curriculum that will become a state-wide model. In 2008-09, all Leon County seventh graders will take a year-long course in civics. Also, the school district will create an on-campus mock-election for all K-12 students to simulate voting in actual local, state and national elections as they occur.
Other programs will include a district-wide mock local government and court system, and on the elementary and middle school level, a district-wide legislative simulation. The program aims to boost civic education, which the state Legislature named a priority after test results show it was lagging.
